RE

Purpose & Aims

The core purpose of RE is to engage pupils in exploring and responding to challenging questions raised by religion and worldviews, so that they can develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, including their own.

The curriculum for RE aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews
  • Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews

Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and worldviews

Organisation of the curriculum

National Curriculum states that: ‘Schools have to teach RE and Local councils are responsible for deciding the RE syllabuses. At Strive we follow the Redbridge and Havering SACRE Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. The Agreed Syllabus specifies the minimum religions to be studied in depth as follows:

  • KS1 focus on Christianity and Islam. Children learn about other religions and worldviews in thematic units.
  • KS2 focus mainly on Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism in Lower KS2.

Christianity, Islam and Sikhism are mainly studied in Upper KS2 and non-religious worldviews are included for study in the thematic unit.

Core of the core

The core purpose of RE is to engage pupils in exploring and responding to challenging questions raised by religion and worldviews, so that they can develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions, including their own.

Enrichment

Our RE curriculum is enriched by visits to a range of Places of Worship; chosen to foster a sense of awe and wonder. We invite visitors into the school to talk to children about their knowledge/experience regarding a particular faith thus giving the children a deeper understanding of belief and faith.
