Writing Through Reading
Literacy and communication through speaking and listening are key life skills, and here at Ray Lodge are a core thread that run throughout the English curriculum and the non-core disciplines. Our enriched and ambitious English curriculum contains high quality texts from a range of authors, covers different time periods and address the current issues of our time. We believe that this not only develops our children’s creative communication skills it also enhances their opportunity to discuss and explore key themes and ideas through authorial intent.
As a school, we have decided upon a writing through reading approach as we feel it is the best way to ensure all children are able to increase their vocabulary, understanding and enjoyment of texts. It promotes in-depth discussion of high-quality books daily for every child. We know the children are more able to produce high quality writing when they have been exposed to high quality discussion and ‘rich talk’ conversations about their book.
Having the opportunity to do this every day is vital to the children’s development as writers; we equip the children with the skills to become lifelong learners.
